What temperature setting should I use on my iron to fuse Perler beads?

Every household iron is a little different, so start with a medium heat setting and make sure to use a dry iron — no steam! You may need to adjust the temperature up or down depending on how the beads are melting.

We iron our projects just until the outer edges of the beads fuse together, leaving the center holes open. If you're going for the same look and notice the holes are closing up, try lowering the temperature. Ironing at too high a heat can also warp the pegboard. On the flip side, if the beads aren't fusing at the edges, bump the temperature up a bit.

How do I fuse Perler beads with an iron?

You might already know our standard fusing instructions, but if not, this page will get you up to speed.

But we know—you're here for the extra tips and tricks to take your fusing game to the next level. So let's dive in!

Before you start on your actual project, make a small test patch with a few spare beads. This is a great way to practice the timing, motion, and pressure you'll need, and it also lets you test your iron's temperature beforehand.

Always, always, always use ironing paper! Never place your iron directly on the beads or pegboard. Unfold the paper and iron it first to flatten out any creases—this helps it lay flat against the beads when you're ready to fuse.

When ironing, work slowly in a circular or back-and-forth motion, making sure to cover all areas evenly, including the edges. As the paper heats up, it'll become more transparent, so you can actually see the beads fusing together. Adjust your iron's temperature if needed.

Use firm, even pressure, but don't press down too hard. Pressing too hard can flatten the beads or even knock some loose near the edges of the pegboard.

Don't lift the ironing paper right away! Let it cool for a moment—if you lift too soon, the beads might stick to the paper. When you do lift, go slow. If a few beads come up with the paper, just peel them off, pop them back in place, and give that section a little more heat. Your design will be flexible while it's warm, but it'll stiffen and hold its shape as it cools.

We always recommend ironing both sides for a solid fuse. If you're making a piece for display, go a little longer on the back side. That way the back is well fused and sturdy, while the front stays clean and polished.

What are Perler beads made of?

Perler beads are made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE), a food-grade plastic that contains no harmful chemicals.

And here's something you might not know—Perler beads are recyclable! Just check with your local recycling program to see if they accept them. If you're recycling loose beads (rather than finished projects), be sure to ask if there are any special requirements due to their small size. Let's go green and recycle for a better tomorrow!
